"Educated women have educated children."
A message from the Founder Tien Ching:
I wish to thank all of you who have supported the BC Society for Educating Girls of Rural China. Your generosity has made this program a great success in such a short time.
Under the sponsorship of EGRC, 165 young women from remote villages of Gansu province are attending universities in over 20 cities of China. This year we have 26 graduates and next year, in 2010, we have 50 graduates.
It has proven that we have made a profound difference in the lives of these young women.
As a teenager, I lived in Gansu province and witnessed extreme poverty. After moving to Canada 20 years ago, and experiencing a society of abundance in all areas, I wanted to give something back to my Mother country. For me, one of the best gifts I think we can offer the next generation is to empower young women with an education.
I travel to Gansu every August to interview each applicant; get to know them, their family situation and their dreams. I personally give the funds to each girl.
As a follow-up I also visit the universities where present sponsored students are studying. It is a tremendous challenge for these village girls to not only survive, but do well in these modern Chinese educational environments. I am very proud to announce that all of them are doing well and some have achieved very high academic excellence. There has also been a wonderful “domino” effect – where all present sponsored girls have expressed the desire to help other girls in achieving a similar education.
