"Educated women have educated children."

The BC Society for Educating Girls of Rural China (EGRC) wasfounded in 2005 and it is a registered Canadian charity. In 6 years EGRC has sponsored 250 young women from impoverished rural areas of the Gansu province -the poorest province in China- to obtain a university education.

In 2009 and 2010 there were 76 sponsored students who graduated. 10 of these graduates were accepted into Masters Programs and are pursuing higher education. Other graduates are either working or in the process of finding work. Tien Ching, the founder of EGRC, travels to Gansu every August to personally meet and interview all the girls under the sponsorship and the ones applying the sponsorship. The funding for the new school year will be transferred to each student’s personal bank account at the end of August 2010, just before the new school year starts. This year there are 174 students received funding and currently studying at 92 universities in over 25 different cities throughout China.

The sponsored students not only benefit from the Society’s financial aid; they also learn and are inspired by the idea of “Giving”. Most of the students have expressed the desire to help others when are able to. Recently, a few graduate students who are employed have opened a joint bank account, and they encourage each other to save a small amount of money each month from their own income and plan to sponsor one or few girls to go to university next year.

EGRC wishes to thank all people who have supported this program in the past six years. You have made differences in these young women’s lives.
